Sensory & Biodiversity Garden/Outdoor Classroom
Sensory & Biodiversity Garden/Outdoor Classroom
We are in the process of developing a Sensory & Biodiversity Garden on our school grounds. Our aim is to provide a beautiful, natural, safe sensory area for all our pupils but especially for those with additional needs. plans for the project are available for viewing above.
The vast majority of primary school yards in Ireland are traditional in their design and do not provide a diverse, inclusive play environment for pupils with different interests and needs. Traditional ball games generally take over school yards and those who are not interested in these games are often left on the periphery. We are developing this area in our school as we believe that every child should have the opportunity to enjoy their outdoor playtime to the fullest. Our hope is that once completed, this beautiful area will add to the strong inclusive culture of our school and provide a diverse play area for present and future pupils for generations to come.

Sensory & Biodiversity Garden Update-October 2023
We are very fortunate to be part of such a supportive school community and the Parents Association and Staff have already raised €10,380 for this project. Sincere thanks to the Newtown Community Bingo for their donation of €500 towards the project and we are also very thankful to Michael Moynihan T.D. for his assistance in our school receiving a most generous donation of €10,000 from the Tomar Trust Fund, for which we are extremely grateful. However we still have approximately €15k to raise to fully complete this project.
Parents & Families, thank you for your ongoing support. The Parent’s Association and staff are planning some lovely fundraising events this year and I ask that you get behind them, support and promote these fundraisers as best you can.
To all our fellow parishioners and to the wider community we are asking for your support also. Should you like to make a donation to this very worthwhile project it would be most appreciated. Donations can be posted or handed into the school office or you can contact the school by phone (063) 70236, or email shandrumsec@gmail.com for bank details.
